
Patient Guidance
for Eye Surgery
Before operation
Patient should not eat any solid food 3 hours
before the surgery time. Food taken should be
light.
Patient should have head bath on the morning
before surgery.
Patient should come to the hospital 2 hours
before the appointed time of surgery and bring
along all the recent reports as advised by the
Doctor.
If the patient is on medication for high blood
pressure or diabetes, the medication must be
taken as usual.
As instructed by the Doctor, all medication to
be started before surgery.
What to expect
after the operation
After the operation, the Doctor will
examine you and then you will be asked to go
home. You must not go or drive alone but you
must ask someone to take you home.
You will be prescribed some medication to be
taken on the day of the surgery and on the days
afterwards.
You will be asked to wear dark glasses after the
surgery.
The Doctor will ask you to return for an
examination on the following day of the surgery.
Post operative care
- Do not rub or put pressure on the
operated eye.
- Put small balls of cotton in a bowl of
water & boil for 10 minutes. Squeeze out the
excess water and clean the discharge around
the upper and lower eyelid.
- Pull down lower eyelid a little and put
a drop of the medicine prescribed by the
Doctor into the eye.
- After the operation wear dark glasses
throughout the day for 7 days.
- Wipe tears below the eye.
- Do not sleep on the operated side for 7
days.
- For the first 7 days after surgery do
not wash your face or head. You may have a
bath below the neck onwards.
- Do not bend your head below waist level
for 7-10 days.
- For the first 2 days after surgery do
not read or watch TV.
- For doing specific activities you may
consult the Doctor.
All instructions before, during & after
surgery will be separately given to the
patients & their relatives.
All eye surgeries including cataract surgery
are day care surgeries
NOT requiring overnight stay in the
hospital. |
